Nitroglycerin for Controlling Myocardial Infarction
Sublingual nitroglycerin rarely opens up the occluded coronary arteries; but still its ability to reduce wall tension and ventricular filling pressure, improve coronary blood flows particularly in the ischemic zones and antiplatelet effects make this nitrate an extremely attractive and logical treatment option for the patients suffering from myocardial infarction. Nitrate when administered by patients having heart attack reduce their systematic arterial and pulmonary capillary wedge pressures. These medications also help in reducing the volume of the left ventricular chambers and infarct size of the patients. On the whole, the nitrates minimize the chances of further mechanical complications.
